Description
Festive twisted cookies with almond and citrus flavors, adorned with sweet icing.

- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
- 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
- 1 Large egg
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon Almond extract
- Zest of 1 orange
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1 cup Powdered sugar (for icing)
- 2 tablespoons Orange juice
- 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon Almond milk (or regular milk)
- Colored sprinkles (optional, for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until creamy and light in color, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, almond extract, and the zests of both the orange and lemon to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
- Divide the dough in half, wrap each half in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for about 30 minutes or until it is firm.
- Once chilled, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
- Using cookie cutters, cut the dough into desired shapes and twist them slightly before transferring to the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Watch carefully to prevent overbaking.
- While the cookies cool, mix powdered sugar, orange juice, lemon juice, and almond milk until smooth for icing. Adjust thickness as needed.
- Once cookies are cool, drizzle icing and sprinkle with colored sprinkles if desired.
- Let icing set for about 30 minutes before serving or packaging.
Notes
Be sure to chill the dough for best results. Can store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
