Description

Char Siu chicken thighs are a delicious and flavorsome dish that brings the taste of Asian barbeque right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine (or a dry sherry)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring (optional for color)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice wine, sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, black pepper, and red food coloring (if using). Mix well.
  2. Marinate the Chicken: Place the chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, ensuring the pieces are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 120 minutes, or overnight for best flavor.
  3. Preheat the Grill: When you’re ready to cook, preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  4. Grill the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting excess drip off. Place the chicken thighs on the grill. Grill for about 6-7 minutes per side, or until the chicken is cooked through and has nice grill marks.
  5. Baste with Marinade: If desired, brush the chicken with some reserved marinade during the last few minutes of grilling for extra flavor and moisture.
  6. Check for Doneness: Ensure the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (75°C). Remove from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Slice the grilled chicken and sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions before serving.

Notes

For a healthier option, substitute skinless chicken thighs or chicken breasts. To make it vegetarian, consider using tofu or seitan.
