Description

Delightful cookies with a rich color and taste, perfect for the holiday season or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; whisk until well combined.
  3. Cream together softened butter and granulated sugar in a separate bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract into the creamed mixture until fully combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined; fold in chopped nuts if using.
  6. Shape small amounts of dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set and centers are soft; let cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  8. Once cooled, roll each cookie in powdered sugar until fully coated; consider rolling them again before serving.

Notes

To keep cookies fresh, store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days or refrigerate for up to a week. Freeze uncooked dough or baked cookies for up to 3 months.
