Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; whisk until well combined.
- Cream together softened butter and granulated sugar in a separate bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Beat in the egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract into the creamed mixture until fully combined.
- Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined; fold in chopped nuts if using.
- Shape small amounts of dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set and centers are soft; let cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Once cooled, roll each cookie in powdered sugar until fully coated; consider rolling them again before serving.
Notes
To keep cookies fresh, store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days or refrigerate for up to a week. Freeze uncooked dough or baked cookies for up to 3 months.
