- 1 sheet puff pastry, defrosted but still cold (10 x 10 inches)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 1/3 cups shredded white cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus extra for topping
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water for the egg wash.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the defrosted puff pastry sheet.
- Brush the top of the puff pastry with the egg wash.
- Sprinkle the white cheddar cheese evenly over the puff pastry.
- Add freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of salt if desired.
- Lightly press down the cheese into the pastry with a rolling pin.
- Fold the pastry in half and roll gently to seal the edges.
- Cut the folded pastry into 1/2-inch strips.
- Twist each strip several times and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with more egg wash and sprinkle with extra black pepper.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Cheese straws should be enjoyed in moderation due to their calorie density. Pair with dips such as spicy mustard or ranch.
