Description
A delightful variation of the classic puppy chow, featuring the sweet, creamy, and slightly tangy flavor of orange.
Ingredients
Scale
- 9 cups rice Chex cereal
- 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
- 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
- 1/4 cup instant vanilla pudding mix
- 2 tablespoons orange gelatin powder
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup orange candy melts (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Cereal: Add the rice Chex cereal to a very large mixing bowl and set aside.
- Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips and unsalted butter. Microwave in 20–30 second bursts, stirring after each, until melted and smooth.
- Mix in Flavorings: Stir in the vanilla extract, orange extract, finely grated orange zest, instant vanilla pudding mix, and orange gelatin powder until fully dissolved. The mixture should be thick, glossy, and pale orange.
- Combine with Cereal: Pour the warm orange creamsicle mixture over the cereal. Gently fold with a spatula until all of the cereal is evenly coated.
- Prepare for Coating: Transfer the coated cereal to a large zip-top bag or container with a tight-fitting lid. Add the powdered sugar.
- Shake It Up: Seal and shake vigorously until every piece gets coated in powdered sugar and no sticky spots remain. If needed, add a little extra powdered sugar.
- Cool Down the Cereal: Spread the coated cereal in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it cool and set for 15–20 minutes.
- Add the Drizzle: For the drizzle, melt the orange candy melts with the vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl, heating in short bursts and stirring until smooth.
- Final Touch: Drizzle the melted candy evenly over the cooled puppy chow and allow it to set completely.
- Serve: Break up any large clusters, transfer to a serving bowl or airtight container, and enjoy!
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks. Avoid overheating the chocolate and be gentle when coating the cereal.
