Description

A delightful sandwich packed with layers of meats, cheeses, and a zesty olive salad, perfect for lunch or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round loaf of Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup green olives, chopped
  • 1 cup black olives, chopped
  • 1/2 cup giardiniera (pickled vegetable mix)
  • 1/2 pound sliced mortadella
  • 1/2 pound sliced salami
  • 1/2 pound sliced ham
  • 1/2 pound provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Slice the top off the round loaf of Italian bread. Hollow out the inside, leaving about an inch of bread around the sides and bottom. Keep the removed bread for later use.
  2. Make the Olive Salad: In a large bowl, combine the chopped green olives, black olives, giardiniera, olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Mix well to combine.
  3. Layer the Sandwich: Start layering the meats in the hollowed-out loaf. First, add a layer of mortadella, then salami, and ham. Top with provolone cheese.
  4. Add the Olive Salad: Spoon a generous amount of the olive salad over the cheese layer. Make sure to pack it in well.
  5. Seal the Sandwich: Place the top of the loaf back on. Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap. Let it sit in the fridge for at least a few hours or overnight.
  6. Serve: To serve, unwrap the sandwich and slice it into wedges or smaller sections.

Notes

Fresh ingredients make a huge difference. Letting the sandwich sit allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
