A delightful blend of a classic Monte Cristo sandwich transformed into a warm breakfast casserole, perfect for brunch gatherings.

- 6 slices of bread (white or brioche)
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
- 1 cup cooked ham, diced
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Butter for greasing the baking dish
- Powdered sugar for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
- Cut the bread into cubes and spread half of it in the prepared dish.
- Sprinkle half of the Swiss cheese and diced ham over the bread.
- Add the remaining bread cubes, followed by the rest of the cheese and ham.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
- Let it sit for about 15 minutes to absorb.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let it cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.
Notes
Use day-old bread for better absorption of the egg mixture. Don’t skip the soaking time for the best texture.
