Description

A delightful blend of a classic Monte Cristo sandwich transformed into a warm breakfast casserole, perfect for brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices of bread (white or brioche)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup cooked ham, diced
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish
  • Powdered sugar for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and spread half of it in the prepared dish.
  3. Sprinkle half of the Swiss cheese and diced ham over the bread.
  4. Add the remaining bread cubes, followed by the rest of the cheese and ham.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
  6. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to absorb.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  8. Let it cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better absorption of the egg mixture. Don’t skip the soaking time for the best texture.
