Description

A quick and easy recipe for Mongolian Beef that features tender slices of beef in a rich, sweet, and savory sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup broccoli florets (optional)
  • 1 cup bell peppers, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the thinly sliced flank steak with cornstarch until evenly coated. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the beef to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until browned, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  6. If desired, add broccoli and bell peppers to the sauce, cooking for about 3-4 minutes until they are tender-crisp.
  7. Return the cooked beef to the skillet, tossing to coat it well in the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Stir in the chopped green onions, cooking for an additional minute.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary—add more soy sauce or sugar based on your preference.
  10. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, substitute beef with tofu or tempeh. Feel free to add more vegetables to enhance the dish.
