Description

Create colorful lava lamp style suncatchers that engage kids in art and craft while adding vibrant decor to your home.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic bottles or jars
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (such as canola oil)
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda
  • A small funnel (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Scissors (to cut the bottle, if needed)

Instructions

  1. Clean and dry your plastic bottle or jar. Cut it if you want a larger opening.
  2. Fill the bottle about one-quarter full with water using a funnel if necessary.
  3. Pour vegetable oil into the bottle on top of the water until it’s almost full.
  4. Add several drops of food coloring into the bottle.
  5. If desired, sprinkle or mix in some glitter.
  6. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop them into the bottle to create a lava effect.
  7. Seal the bottle with glue or tape around the cap if desired.
  8. Place your suncatcher in a sunny window to see the colorful liquids shine through.

Notes

Ensure to supervise young children during crafting. Store the suncatcher out of direct sunlight when not in use.
