Description

A delicious homemade spaghetti sauce made with simple ingredients that is healthier than store-bought versions.


Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey or beef (93% lean recommended)
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes, preferably fire-roasted
  • ¼ cup water
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1½ teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1½ teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground turkey or beef and break it up with a wooden spoon until fully browned.
  3. Lower the heat to medium-low.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, water, tomato paste, minced garlic, oregano, basil, parsley, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  5. Cover the skillet and let the sauce simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve the sauce warm over cooked pasta or vegetables.

Notes

For a heartier sauce, consider adding chopped onions, bell peppers, or mushrooms. This sauce can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
