Description

Delicious stuffed pockets of pizza dough filled with cheese, meats, and veggies, perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup sliced pepperoni
  • ¼ cup ricotta cheese
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning (optional)
  • Marinara sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. Then, add the olive oil, salt, and flour. Mix everything together to form a dough.
  2. Knead the Dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. You can add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  3. Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, covering it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm area for about 60 minutes or until it doubles in size.
  4. Prepare the Filling: While the dough is rising, mix the mozzarella, ricotta, pepperoni, and Italian seasoning in a bowl. Feel free to add more ingredients like vegetables or other meats if you wish.
  5. Roll Out the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle about 6 inches in diameter.
  6. Fill the Calzones: Place a generous amount of the filling on one half of each dough circle. Be careful not to overfill, as it can make sealing difficult.
  7. Seal the Calzones: Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges tightly to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a nice design.
  8. Bake the Calzones: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You can brush them with a little olive oil for a golden color. Bake for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown.
  9. Serve: Let the calzones cool for a few minutes before cutting them in half. Serve with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

Don’t overfill your calzones to ensure a proper seal. Experiment with various fillings to suit your taste.
