Delicious homemade soft pretzels with a buttery flavor and chewy texture, perfect for snacks or gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Make the dough: Add the flour and salt to the mixture. Mix everything together until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Let it rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven: While the dough rises, preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Shape the pretzels: Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 pieces, roll each piece into a rope, and twist it into a pretzel shape.
- Boil water and baking soda: In a pot, bring about 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil.
- Boil the pretzels: Carefully place each pretzel in the boiling water for about 30 seconds.
- Egg wash and salt: Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake the pretzels: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving.
