Description

A comforting blend of French onion soup and classic mac and cheese, featuring caramelized onions and gooey Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups macaroni pasta
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups Gruyère cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the macaroni pasta according to the package instructions, then drain and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions and sugar, cooking until caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  3. Stir in the beef broth and thyme, letting it simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Add the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Stir in the cooked macaroni and half of the grated Gruyère, mixing well.
  6. Transfer to a baking dish and top with the remaining Gruyère cheese.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For variations, try using different cheeses or adding vegetables like broccoli or mushrooms.
