Description

This French onion sloppy joes recipe turns rich caramelized onions, juicy beef, and gooey cheese into a bold sandwich you’ll crave weekly. Easy, quick, and wildly satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef (85/15)

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp tomato paste

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp dried thyme

1/2 cup beef broth (or French onion soup)

1 tbsp all-purpose flour

Salt and black pepper to taste

4–6 sandwich buns or brioche rolls

4–6 slices provolone or gruyère cheese

Optional: fresh parsley or chives for garnish

Instructions

1. In a skillet, heat butter and oil. Add onions, a pinch of salt, and cook over medium-low for 20 minutes until golden. Remove and set aside.

2. Add beef to skillet. Brown and break up meat, then drain excess fat.

3. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire, garlic powder, thyme, and flour. Cook for 2 minutes.

4. Add broth and onions back in. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.

5. Toast buns. Spoon beef mixture onto each and top with cheese.

6. Broil briefly until cheese melts. Garnish and serve hot.

Notes

Make ahead: Prepare filling up to 3 days in advance.

Freezer-friendly: Store cooled filling in portions for up to 2 months.

Turn into sliders for parties by using Hawaiian rolls and smaller cheese slices.
