Description
A delicious twist on classic meatloaf with rich caramelized onions and melted cheese, reminiscent of French onion soup.
Ingredients
- Ground Beef: 2 pounds (or turkey for a lean option)
- Caramelized Onions: 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- Breadcrumbs: 1 cup (or gluten-free alternative)
- Shredded Cheese: ½ cup (Swiss or Gruyere)
- Egg: 1 large
- Garlic Powder: 1 teaspoon
- Thyme: 1 teaspoon
- Salt and Pepper: To taste
- Optional: Onion soup mix for extra flavor
Instructions
- Start by caramelizing sliced onions in olive oil over medium heat for 20-25 minutes until they turn golden brown.
- Next, in a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, cheese, egg, seasoning, and the cooled onions. Mix gently to ensure everything is well incorporated.
- Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it on a lined baking sheet or in a loaf pan for better structure.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the meatloaf for 50-60 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Finally, let the meatloaf rest for about 5-10 minutes before slicing it to maintain its juiciness.
Notes
When caramelizing your onions, cook them low and slow. Avoid overmixing the meatloaf mixture to prevent a dense texture. Let the meatloaf rest after baking.
