Description

A unique fusion of French onion soup and juicy burgers, creating a memorable dining experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound salted butter
  • 3 large yellow onions, cut into large slices
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
  • 1/4 cup dried Italian seasoning
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 8 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 2 fresh thyme sprigs, leaves only
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Four 8-ounce burger patties
  • 4 brioche buns
  • 8 slices Gruyère cheese
  • Paprika for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium-high heat, then add the onions, garlic, Italian seasoning, and bay leaves. Cook for 20-25 minutes until softened and caramelized.
  2. Pour in the beef broth and add thyme leaves. Bring to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Season the soup with salt and pepper. Allow to cool, then refrigerate overnight for best flavor.
  4. The next day, reheat the soup on low for 8-10 minutes, skimming off any solids if necessary.
  5. Preheat a grill pan or outdoor grill, and grill the burger patties to your desired doneness.
  6. Assemble the burgers by placing the bottom half of a brioche bun in an oven-safe bowl. Add a burger patty, top with a scoop of warm French onion soup, more sautéed onions, and pour broth around the bun.
  7. Add 2 slices of Gruyère cheese on top, sprinkle with paprika.
  8. Broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  9. Top with the brioche bun and serve immediately with utensils for your guests.

Notes

Enjoy with classic sides such as French fries or a fresh green salad. Make sure the onions are caramelized slowly for the best flavor.
