Description

A delightful combination of cheesy tortellini, savory Italian sausage meatballs, and rich tomato sauce, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (400 g) cans Italian whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 large white onion, halved
  • 40–60 g salted butter
  • Sea salt flakes, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 250 g tortellini (cheese or spinach filled)
  • 400–450 g Italian sausages, removed from casings and rolled into small meatballs
  • 3–4 cups baby spinach leaves
  • Pinch of chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 ball mozzarella cheese, torn
  • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly oil a baking dish.
  2. Melt the salted butter in a skillet over medium heat and cook the halved onion until softened.
  3. Add the canned tomatoes, sea salt, black pepper, and chili flakes to the skillet and let it simmer for 20 minutes, then remove the onion halves.
  4. Roll Italian sausage into small meatballs and cook them in a separate pan until golden brown.
  5. In the baking dish, add tortellini and fresh spinach, then pour the tomato sauce over and stir gently.
  6. Add the browned meatballs on top, tear mozzarella cheese over the dish, and sprinkle with grated Parmesan.
  7. Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving, garnished with extra Parmesan and olive oil if desired.

Notes

Ensure the tortellini are not overcooked before baking.
