Description

Crispy mini blooming onions made in the air fryer, offering a crunchy exterior and tender inside, perfect for snacks or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions (preferably sweet onions)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: Begin by peeling the onions and cutting off the top and bottom to create a stable base. Carefully slice downwards from the center of the onion towards the base, making four to six cuts to create “petals.” Make sure not to cut all the way through; leave some of the base intact.
  2. Soak the onions: In a bowl, combine the buttermilk and hot sauce (if using). Place the prepared onions in the mixture and let them soak for at least 30 minutes to help the petals open up during cooking.
  3. Make the coating: In another bowl, mix together the flour, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Coat the onions: After soaking, remove the onions from the buttermilk mixture and let any excess liquid drip off. Gently dredge each onion in the flour mixture, ensuring that all petals are coated well.
  5. Air fry the onions: Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket. Lightly spray the onions with cooking spray. Cook at 375°F (190°C) for about 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Check halfway through for even cooking.
  6. Serve: Once they are golden and crispy, carefully remove the onions from the air fryer. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

Enjoy crispy mini blooming onions with a variety of dips like ranch dressing, spicy ketchup, or garlic aioli.
