Description

A delightful holiday treat combining salty and sweet flavors, perfect for festive gifting and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 40 to 45 Saltine crackers
  • 1 cup (225 grams) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar (about 200 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (12 ounces or 340 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt (for sprinkling)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/3 cup crushed candy canes or holiday sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a rimmed 13 by 18 inch baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar over medium heat until dissolved and bring to a rolling boil for about 3 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour the caramel over the crackers and spread evenly.
  4. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes until the caramel is bubbling and glossy.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the caramel, letting them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to soften.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate into a smooth layer. Return to the oven for 30 to 60 seconds if necessary.
  7. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and optional toppings. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Once set, break into pieces and store in an airtight container.

Notes

Monitor the caramel closely to prevent burning. Quality chocolate enhances the overall flavor.
