Description
A delightful holiday treat combining salty and sweet flavors, perfect for festive gifting and celebrations.
Ingredients
Scale
- 40 to 45 Saltine crackers
- 1 cup (225 grams) unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar (about 200 grams)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups (12 ounces or 340 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt (for sprinkling)
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1/3 cup crushed candy canes or holiday sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a rimmed 13 by 18 inch baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar over medium heat until dissolved and bring to a rolling boil for about 3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour the caramel over the crackers and spread evenly.
- Bake for 5 to 7 minutes until the caramel is bubbling and glossy.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the caramel, letting them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to soften.
- Spread the melted chocolate into a smooth layer. Return to the oven for 30 to 60 seconds if necessary.
- Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and optional toppings. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Once set, break into pieces and store in an airtight container.
Notes
Monitor the caramel closely to prevent burning. Quality chocolate enhances the overall flavor.
