Description

Chow Mein is a beloved Chinese stir-fry dish featuring tender chicken, fresh vegetables, and chewy noodles in a flavorful sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz Chow Mein noodles (fresh or dried)
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger (grated)
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup carrots (julienned)
  • 2 stalks celery (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 3 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Begin by cooking the Chow Mein noodles according to package instructions.
  2. Once finished, drain the noodles and rinse them with cold water to prevent sticking. Set them aside.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and cornstarch. This will be your sauce.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat.
  5. Add the sliced chicken to the wok and cook until golden and cooked through for about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Once cooked, add in the minced garlic and grated ginger, and stir-fry together for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  7. Now, add the shredded cabbage, julienned carrots, and thinly sliced celery to the wok.
  8. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are crisp-tender.
  9. Toss in the cooked noodles and bean sprouts.
  10. Pour the prepared sauce over everything in the wok.
  11. Continuously toss everything together for 1-2 minutes until the noodles are heated through and everything is well-coated in the thickened sauce.
  12. Once everything is ready, serve your homemade Chow Mein hot and enjoy right away!

Notes

Do not overcook the noodles; keep all ingredients prepped; stir-frying on high heat is key to achieving ‘wok hei’ flavor.
