- 2 cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; whisk until well combined.
- In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Carefully stir in boiling water to create a thin batter.
- If desired, fold in semi-sweet chocolate chips.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove cakes from oven and cool in pans for about 20 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting once cooled.
