Description

Cabbage and Potatoes is a warm and filling dish that brings comfort and nourishment to the table, highlighting the flavors of humble ingredients while being easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 3 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1.5 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients. Chop the cabbage, slice the onion, and peel and cut the potatoes into chunks.
  2. In a large pot, heat the butter over medium heat until it melts and foams. Add the sliced red onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Add the green cabbage and Yukon Gold potatoes to the pot, mixing well with the butter and onions.
  5. Pour in the vegetable broth and season with salt, black pepper, paprika, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  6. Raise the heat to bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 20-25 minutes until tender.
  7. Increase the heat to cook off some liquid, allowing the dish to thicken.
  8. Stir in the lemon juice for freshness. Adjust seasonings if necessary.
  9. Ladle the hot Cabbage and Potatoes into bowls and serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
