Delicious homemade Greek chicken gyros with marinated chicken, tzatziki sauce, and fresh toppings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (cut into thin strips)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 lemon (juiced)
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cucumber (grated and squeezed dry)
- 2 tbsp fresh dill (chopped)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 clove garlic (minced)
- 4–6 pita breads (warmed)
- Sliced tomatoes
- Red onion
- Lettuce
- Feta cheese (for topping)
Instructions
- Marinate the chicken: In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Add the chicken strips to the bowl and toss well until fully coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 4 hours.
- Prepare the tzatziki sauce: In a medium bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, chopped dill, lemon juice, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt. Stir until well mixed, cover, and refrigerate.
- Cook the chicken: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken strips and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through.
- Warm the pita bread: Warm the pita in a toaster, skillet, or wrapped in foil in a warm oven.
- Assemble the gyros: Spread tzatziki sauce on a warm pita, add cooked chicken, and top with tomatoes, red onion, lettuce, and feta cheese. Serve immediately.
Notes
For best flavor, marinate the chicken for as long as possible. Serve with a Greek salad or fries.
