Description

Delicious and portable apple hand pies made with flaky pastry and spiced apples.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound Granny Smith apples
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 Tablespoons water (divided)
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 frozen pastry puff sheets (thawed)
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 Tablespoon cold water
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and cut the apples into ½ inch pieces.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine chopped apples, sugar, butter, and cinnamon, stirring until the butter melts.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of water, cover, and cook for 10-12 minutes until apples are soft.
  4. Mix remaining 2 tablespoons of water and cornstarch in a bowl, then add to the apple mixture and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until thickened.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and roll out puff pastry sheets, cutting each into six 3×6 inch rectangles.
  6. Place apple mixture on half of the rectangles and cover with the other half that has slits for steam to escape.
  7. Seal the edges with a fork and brush with egg white mixed with cold water.
  8. Sprinkle the tops with sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.

Notes
