Description

Delightful apple bars with a crumbly oat crust and a sweet apple filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 3 cups apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. Cut the cold, cubed butter into the dry mixture until crumbly.
  4. Reserve 1 ½ cups of the mixture for topping, and press the rest into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 10–12 minutes until set.
  5. Prepare the apple filling by tossing chopped apples with lemon juice, cornstarch, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using).
  6. Pour the apple mixture evenly over the baked crust.
  7. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture over the top.
  8. Bake for another 30–35 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Cool completely in the pan before slicing into squares.
  10. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar and milk, and drizzle over the cooled bars before serving.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days or refrigerate for up to a week. For long-term storage, freeze for up to 3 months.
